Baker, Richard  (British archaeologist who digs outside Basra, Henry’s school friend)
In Basrah on his way to kuwait, he bumped into an old school friend dressed as an Arab with a strange manner and was slipped chit inidicating Major John Wilberforce recommended one Ahmed Mohammed.  i think the friend was carmichael and he used morse code to warn baker of danger, then slipped note in his pocket.  baker then went to consulate where he prevented Robert Hall from shooting carmichael.

"Basrah" is the city where Carmichael saw Edward and recognised him as an enemy. 
"Lefarge" turns out to actually be "Defarge" and is a reference to a Charles Dickens character  it is an allusion to the fact that the name of a vital witness has been stitched into a scarf.
